The story behind the image
Long before we came to Pienza, it had begun to rain. So we checked in at the hotel – the magnificient Hotel Relais Il Chiostro – and waited for the rain to stop. And indeed, two hours later, the sun crept through the clouds, and we could explore the town. The day tourists were gone already, and it was unusually quiet for an Italian town.
The dark clouds were still around, though, and I took this photo of the main piazza of Pienza, with exactly this dramatic look in mind. I shot on color slide film and converted to b&w later. And I still like it.
