The story behind the image
With the upcoming soccer world championship in Qatar, I thought it might be worthwhile to pull out an image of soccer fans.
The month of June 2006 was dominated (alas in Germany) by the soccer world championship. On the 20th June I had the chance to visit the match Ecuador vs. Germany in Berlin, and I brought my gear to shoot some impressions.
The entire city seemed to be electrified by the match, and at the central train station where I shot this image, supporters of the German team where arriving almost constantly. Most of them where heading for the ‘fan mile’ in the city center to enjoy a public broadcast of the match.
This group of four young men, presumably from Bavaria as they were clad in traditional Bavarian leather trousers, were in a really good mood and happily posed for me. I like the incredible amount of fan gear that they wore: flags, shawls, shirts, wrist bands, socks, and a wig.
Later that day, Germany won their match 3:0 which lead to even more support for the German team. However, the dream of winning the championship did not come true in the end. Still, I think it’s fair to say that the summer of 2006 had been an exciting period in Germany, and these four men perfectly express this mood. Awesome.
