Urlaub, Germany

AUGUST 2019 – The German word ‘Urlaub’ (engl. holidays) has been written using tiny shells within a heart that has been shaped from sand. Photo © Mark Zanzig/zanzig.com

The story behind the image

In Germany, summer time is vacation time, and the German word for vacation is Urlaub. When we were in Bansin in Germany, we spotted this work of art on the public beach. It shows the joys of Urlaub into a single image: The wordmark is formed from tiny shells. Small threads of tang form gentle waves, and everything has been put into a heart that has been precisely formed from wet sand. Beams emerge from the heart in the sand, resembling sunbeams. Very appropriate for this time of the year.

I love it.
