The story behind the image
The winter 1944/1945 was quite cold. However, that time was fantastic for kids if they had the chance to get away from the ongoing war. For my family this was true. My grandparents had built an interim home in Malente-Gremsmühlen, and just 40 kilometers away from Kiel, the world was apparently all OK.
This photo from the family archive shows my aunt, my mother, and their cousin (from left to right) sitting on a sleigh, getting ready for the next ride down a small hill. I love the focus of the kids on the upcoming ride. They do not get distracted by the photographer (my grandfather) at all, and the mood is apparently good.
