The story behind the image
This historic postcard sent in June 1900 shows the beautiful lake Dieksee in Gremsmühlen in Germany.
A group of girls on the pier lean against the railing of a small pier. It’s a peaceful scene that shows why tourism in and around Malente and Gremsmühlen was rising steadily. People from the next big German cities – Hamburg, Hannover, Berlin – wanted to escape the hectic, noise, dirt, and pollution, they had at home and enjoy tranquility in nature. It had become more affordable to travel, and the area around Malente offered what the tourists were looking for.
Postcards were an important part of travel promotion as visitors could report home what they had found – which in turn attracted further visitors who wanted to experience this, too.
