The story behind the image
On our way to Santa Barbara, we had read about Lompoc being “The Flower-Seed Capital of the World” and wanted to see this by ourselves. In the neighborhood of Lompoc we visited Solvang, home to a large Danish community. It was founded in 1911 by settlers from Denmark who brought their culture over. Over time, this blended with the American culture.
We found Danish bakeries, restaurants and shops. No surprise that Solvang is called the “Danish Capital of America”. But to us the town felt like a wild mix of “Denmark plus Holland with a touch of Norway” – and as such was very different from the US we had experienced so far. For visitors from Europe it may be a waste of time, though.
As always, Wikipedia knows a lot more.
