The story behind the image

From Kingman in Arizona we continued our drive along the Historic Highway 66 via Hackberry towards Williams, a busy town about 60 miles south of the Grand Canyon. Despite catering to tourists who “get the kicks on Route 66” the town could preserve its charms. It’s easy to imagine that gold-diggers and other adventure seekers would stay here as it is the only noteworthy settlement in the area.

My photo shows the Grand Canyon Avenue (which also is the Historic Highway 66.) The area hasn’t changed a lot over the past two decades. However: the gas prices have changed dramatically! My photo indicates a price of $1.629 for a gallon of unleaded gas. A Google Streetview image of the same pertol station, taken October 2022, shows a price of $4.399. Now, that’s quite some price hike! (This is an annual price increase, or CAGR, of roughly 5.4%, every single year.)
