The story behind the image
This morning I shared an image from the Via Panoramica near Porto Santo Stefano in Italy. Here’s another one that should make you consider the drive on the truly scenic route. It’s the area just south west of Monte Argentario. Beautiful, clear water. Tiny, secluded beaches and villas. Virtually no traffic. Sounds like a good drive, eh?
But my word of caution holds: The Via Panoramica circles the peninsula, and it’s soo tempting to take the full circle from Porto Santo Stefano to Porto Ercole. We did it and found out (much to our surprise, I have to admit) that one part was still a gravel road, a bad one. (It starts here going east, so I took the image just a few minutes before the gravel road began.) While it seems to be just a short distance – 4 kilometers – it may wreck your nerves (and your car!) So, please do yourself a favor and turn around when the dirt road begins. I know, it’s not cool to drive all the way back to Porto Santo Stefano, but it really makes sense. Of course, if you’ve got a sturdy 4×4, it should not pose a problem to use the gravel road.
