The story behind the image
We had taken the passenger ferry from Olhao in Portugal to the Ilha do Farol as the Algarve guidebook promised the most beautiful beach in the region. While we believed this to be next to impossible, because the beaches of the Algarve region already belong to the best beaches we had seen. But heck, we gave it a try and took the 30 minute boat ride to the island.
Now, the Ilha do Farol is quite unique as there are no cars in the village – just boats and pedestrians! – which makes the town peaceful, quiet and very relaxing. You walk about 5 to 10 minutes from the pier to the beach where you will encounter an awesome location. The beach is very flat and disappears ever so gently in the Atlantic Ocean making, just perfect for small kids.
I could imagine spending a full vacation here on the island, but the 30 minute ride to Olhao is probably a drawback.
My image shows one of the many traditional bungalows in town, with the Cabo de Santa Maria lighthouse overtowering the building in the background.
