The story behind the image
The Roman Forum is situated in the valley between the Capitol Hills and the Palatine Hills. It was the center of the ancient world – its commerical, cultural, political and religious center. It featured the first paved road (Via Sacra) which is said to be built around 600 BC. Over time, the emperors and merchants added huge villas, potentially turning the place into an overloaded, kitschy town center. This is – of course – a modern view. The old Romans seemed to be quite happy with their city.
Anyway, this is a shot towards east, from the Terrazza Belvedere del Palatino. You can see the Arco di Tito on the right, which is the entrance to the forum. On the left you see the Chiesa di Santa Francesca Romana, the oldest Christian church in the Roman Forum. The Colosseo can be seen in the back.
The view from high above the forum was a breathtaking experience. It was really quiet up there, quite a difference to the masses that populated the Forum Romanum. Very nice.
