The story behind the image
As the year comes to an end, it’s time for chasing both the evil ghosts and the winter away and make room for joy and happiness in the new year. For this, the folks of Austria and Southern Bavaria have the Perchten, people who disguise in fur clothes and scary looking masks made from wood, often with horns, and heavy, loud bells. They dance wearing real torches and pose for photos.
Make no mistake, touching one of them – especially their horsetail whips – is said to bring back luck, despite of the scary looks.
Yesterday a group of Perchten visited our home town, and we were happy to experience their performance. May their visit have indeed chased away the evils from 2022!
