The story behind the image
The week of sailing images on my site is slowly coming to an end. Here is an image from our 2004 sailing trip across the Baltic Sea which lead us also to my hometown Kiel.
I still remember the Olympic Center very well as I have been here countless times in my youth. Some of my friend used to live in Schilksee, and we visited the nearby beach frequently. I learned to swim at the public swimming hall of the Olympic Center, and I attended sailing events during Kiel Week here.
And now, in August 2004, my father in law steered the yacht safely into the marina in a sunny summer day. It was like coming home. A fantastic feeling.
This photo makes even the concrete buildings of the Olympic Center look nice. I think this is because the buildings are dwarfed by the wide angle and the blue sky. What’s more, all the water and ships further distract from the grey concrete. I think it’s nice, despite the fact that I shot it with my tiny Sony P&S camera.
