The story behind the image

Sailing photography is exciting and can be quite difficult. Exciting, because you get the chance to spend a day on the water and capture awesome, action-packed maritime motives. Difficult, because your ground can be shaky and is constantly going to move and the light can be challenging.

And the light was challenging for this shot. For convenience, I just had just brought my tiny Sony DSC-P72 – a mainstream P&S camera – for this fun trip. But now sunlight was streaming in from the front, illuminating the colorful sails of the yachts. The result: beautiful, harsh contrasts that were difficult to capture. I think the camera did really well.

In any event, this photo illustrates a perfect summer day on the Kieler Förde in my hometown.
