The story behind the image
Today, the traditional Kiel Week will open – a world-class sailing event in my home town, Kiel in Germany. It will be nine days full of action, culture and fun.
So I decided to post a series of maritime images over the next couple of days. From Kiel. From the Baltic Sea. From other places around the world in a maritime setting.
I’ll begin with a photo I shot during Kiel Week 1999. It shows the sails of the tall ship Mir from Russia. We had the pleasure to spend an afternoon on the ship for a mini-cruise on the large bay of Kiel. The weather was excellent and we could even set the sails for a while!
I like this photo because it really boils down the sailing theme into a single image: blue sky, sunshine, sails blowing in the wind. Love it.
