Sailing, Baltic Sea

The story behind the image

We spent a week with the father-in-law on his vintage sailing yacht. Starting in Kopenhagen, Denmark, we’d sail the Baltic Sea with our final destination of Heiligenhafen, Germany.

This photo is from the third leg between Kalvehave and Gedser. The wind was blowing strongly, the sun was shining, and we had a terrific time putting the old lady to good speed.

This was a difficult shot as the boat was rocking the waves which would be calling for a short exposure time, but I wanted to capture the dynamic of the waves, which called for a long exposure. I settled with 1/80 sec which I could hold steady while still getting a nice motion blur from the waves.
