The story behind the image
I have blogged several images of the Sossusvlei in Namibia already, because it is such an inspiring, almost extraterrestrial place.
I love this image because the viewer cannot easily relate the red background with reality. Usually there should be a blue sky of some sort, because clearly the sun is shining. But the background is entirely red. Some clouds are visible, but what is this? Has this image been over edited?
No. This is simply a tree (that has seen better times already) in front of the foot of Dune 45 and its masses of red sand. This shows the incredible dimensions of the Sossusvlei dunes. They are truly giants, dwarfing trees (and people.) Just wow.
