The story behind the image
This image was not taken by me, but it was saved by me. I purchased it a while ago as part of a 250+ image lot, all Kodachrome transparencies from around 1958.
When the parcel arrived I did not have the chance to review it thoroughly. Imagine my joy when I actually did! The images were mostly about California and the south-west of the United States. Stunning landscapes, and more stunning landscapes. All tack-sharp, and without any color stain at all. Sure, there was a bit of dust that had settled on the film, but the overall state of the slides can only be described as ‘very good’. Now, the seller told me that the slides had already been in the bin, but he had second thoughts and took them out again and put them up for sale on the net. Thank you!
Now, here the photographer, Carl Haas, stood in the middle of Weyburn Avenue in Westwood Village and looked towards west. The large tower belonged to the Westwood Village Theatre, a cinema that is now undergoing major renovation works (At the time of writing, it was marked as ‘permanently closed’ in Google Maps. )
The most important change seems to be that the hills behind the tower are not visible any longer, because several houses have been built that obstruct the view at the hills now.
I adore almost everything about this image. Not just the colors but also the composition, the overall focus, and all the old cars and advertisements that give the image a true 1958 look. (Okay, that was easy for Haas as he was there in 1958. 😉
I added a nice white border, a caption, and the name of the photographer to give the well-deserved credit.
I. Just. Love. This. Image. 🙂
