The story behind the image
Here is another image image of the 500+ images lot I acquired last week containing color slides from the late 1950s and early 1960s.
This slide was probably shot around 1960 and highlights why preserving old photos for the future is essential. Huh? Upon first glance, there is nothing (really!) so special about it. It is a crossing in the town of Plettenberg in Germany. Okay, I do like the Ivory-covered house, the old street signs and the neon advertisement (cropped) on the right. Other than that, it’s a crossing somewhere in Germany. Not. Special.
What makes this image so special (to me) is the fact that it cannot be shot any more. The entire crossing of the B236 (the main street) and Bachstraße (to the right) has been changed forever when a bridge was built from 1977 to 1980. The traffic had been delayed too often by the train crossing in the town, and the bridge eliminated the problem.
For this, the ivory-covered house in the photo had to go. It has been replaced by one of the huge pillars of the bridge, see below.

And I think this is interesting. 🙂
