The story behind the image

This is Markree Castle in Ireland, or – as we liked to think – “our castle”. Well, for one night anyway. And we had just one room in that castle for that night. But it was absolutely worth it! The room directly overlooked the garden, and it was great to be woken up by the rising sun in the morning. After opening the curtains we could gaze at the beautiful greens in the sunlight.

The mix of age-old history and modern comfort was awesome. We also noticed the large wooden table opposite of the reception desk where countless letters were laid out for guests that stayed at the castle or would arrive soon (mind you, this was in 1999 without ubiquitous Internet, and wireless Internet was still a dream of the developers.) Add to this the friendly and helpful hotel staff, and you know why it’s been an awesome stay.

This photo is a genuine black-and-white photo, and I used this film to show the dark side of the castle. Its massive walls and impressive windows.

Despite looking a bit gloomy, I like the image.
