The story behind the image
When you’re at the Scottish west coast between Dumfries and Ayr, please do yourself a favor and leave the A77 at Turnberry for Culzean Castle. It is like the storybook castle of your dreams, situated on top of dramatic cliffs with superb views across the sea.
The castle was built from 1777 to 1792 based on an old fortified towercastle. This makes Culzean Castle probably the finest Georgian castle in Scotland. Be prepared to see a lot of tourists during high season – or come late in the afternoon as we did. There were just very few families there, and we did not even had to pay any fees! (Mind you, this was in 2005, and I cannot say whether this is still the case.)
This is the clocktower which is a side building of the castle. It was illuminated by the warm afternoon sun and looked so very nice against the blue sky. Of course, the clock was a good indicator to identify the exact time when I took the photo. 😉
I understand that the building can be rented as a holiday home these days. The prices are not for the faint hearted, but still reasonable. After all, you’ll get three bedrooms in an awesome historical building and location. Maybe it’s worth a consideration?
