The story behind the image
I have been able to acquire a historic postcard from about 1917 that shows the high bridge that crosses the canal near Kiel Holtenau in Germany. This is an exciting image (for me) because until the mid-1980s I still used to take my bicycle and drive to the city center of Kiel – using this bridge!
Built from 1909 to 1911, the bridge was key for connecting the communities and quarters in the north-west of Kiel to the city. In 1988 a ship rammed the bridge, and the decision was made to tear down the bridge and build a new one. Wikipedia has more details (in German).
The majestic building in the back is the Villa Hoheneck which was built in 1902 and has been used as a restaurant for longer periods.
