The story behind the image

For New Years Eve 1973/1974 my parents and I visited my grandparents in Flensburg, Germany. We wore (supposedly) funny party hats and had a good time.

I think my father captured this image showing (from left to right) me, my mother, and my grandmother. I admit that the quality of this genuine black and white photo is mediocre, but there is one thing I really love about this image: the relaxed joy that comes across so well.

Of course, the image also triggers faint memories of the appartment at the Mürwiker Strasse 88. It was a simple three-room appartment with a kitchen and a bathroom. I do remember this place as nice and comfortable. So I always got excited when we visited them – which we did about three to four times a year. It was a welcome change to my home in Kiel, and always a positive experience.

And with this, I wish you and yours a good party tonight (maybe without the funny party hats) and a fantastic start into the year 2025.
