The story behind the image
In 2004, we spent the first couple of nights in South Africa in the city center of Cape Town. Of course, we also explored the Table Mountain, one of the many attractions of the city. On many days, the top of the mountain is in the clouds (called the Table Cloth to locals), and so we had to be spontaneous when we saw that the top was not in the clouds!
One late afternoon the time was right and we drove up to the valley station of the Table Mountain Cableway where I shot this image. The shadows were already quite long and added a nice contrast and depth.
Then we took the cable car to the top and enjoyed the awesome panorama from the nearby viewing platform. The sun was about to set, and we went back to the upper cable car station to enjoy the experience, together with just very few other people.
Having said that – this shot across Cape Town is my preferred shot, because the angle is not as steep as from the top of the mountain. The views up there, however, are much more exciting, and I strongly recommend a visit when in Cape Town.
