The story behind the image
Close to the northern tip of the Isle of Skye in Scotland we were on our way to the grave of Flora MacDonald, one of the Scottish heroines. Born on the island of South Uist, she earned her fame when she helped Charles Edward Stuart (aka as „Bonnie Prince Charlie“), after his defeat in the battle of Culloden, to escape into freedom.
Just a few steps away from the grave and monument is the Skye Museum of Island Life presenting a carefully prepared exhibition with insights into island life a century ago.
I took this image from the Kilmuir cemetery, and I love the panoramic view across the Atlantic Ocean, with the islands Uist and Harris in the distance. It’s an unspoilt area, rough, and far away from everywhere – Glasgow, for example, is a 5+ hour drive away!
