The story behind the image

It’s the last day of the year again, and I’ve been wondering for a while which image might be suitable to close off this year and illustrate my thoughts and hopes for next year.

I finally picked this 2020 image of the suspension bridge across the Drachenschlucht (lit. Dragon Canyon) near Trebesing in Austria. The structure has a span of 175 meters and hovers 70 meters above the canyon, making it the highest and longest suspension bridge for pedestrians in the European Alps. It was opened in June 2002 and has become a popular summer destination for tourists and locals.

Why this image? Well, I believe that the world is in constant flux, probably now more than ever, so there are massive challenges ahead. For me, crossing this bridge was a huge challenge, because I am afraid of heights. Yet, back in August 2020 I managed to get across the bridge. It was not easy for me (and only those with fear of heights can understand this), but I made it. I could cross this bridge because I was brave. And this made me confident to master the known and unknown challenges of life.

2024 will be difficult and probably chaotic, but on the other side of the bridge we hopefully will feel stronger, and the path will become easier.

Whereever you are, whatever you do – I wish you the power to make 2024 an awesome year!
