The story behind the image
On our long trip through Italy in 2000 we drove from Tuscany on the countryside towards south. We deliberately opted to not stay in Rome which would be quite stressful and possibly chaotic with our own car. Also, we believed that Rome is the perfect destination for a city trip on a prolonged weekend.
So we passed Rome in the east – and stopped in the village of Tivoli at the Villa D’Este. This historic palace was erected in the 16th century. Since the end of the first World War it belongs to the Italian state and is open to the public today. Its key feature is the huge garden with hundreds of tiny fountains, statues, water features, caves, and basins.
I remember that this day was very hot, and we were glad that we could rest in the shadows of the trees and listen to the gentle splashing of the water features.
A beautiful and peaceful place.
