The story behind the image
The Port of Hamburg is an enormous maze. Hundreds of berths have been cramped close to the city center, and day-in, day-out ships are arriving from all over the world with valuable goods.
That’s why the German legislation requires harbour pilots (or “Hafenlotsen” in German) for certain ships intending to enter the port. In other words: foreign ships may not enter the port without a properly trained pilot on board. The independent association of maritime and harbour pilots in Hamburg serves this need around the clock and regardless of weather conditions. They are doing a great job. (Read more about the association here.)
This historical building is their home next to the Elbe river, photographed on a beautiful afternoon in summer. Even better is the pilot boat rushing by in this shot.
