The story behind the image
Christmas time is photo time. I went into the archive and selected this historic photo.
Life meant it well with the small Schweim family in their home in Malente-Gremsmühlen in Germany. The family business in Kiel had been growing since the end of the second world war, so they could afford new fur coats for the kids as Christmas gifts in 1946.
These were badly needed as the winter 1946/47 was another cold winter, and the coats effectively protected against the weather. Of course, today it is more than inappropriate to wear coats – but these were different times.
My mother (on the left) was 4½ years old by then and apparently quite happy with the coat.
Merry Christmas!
