The story behind the image

In December 1998 we spent two weeks in the Dominican Republic. In Cabarete, to be more concrete. At the Hotel Terrazas Las Palmas, to be even more concrete. The Hotel was just a three-star category but a good match for our needs. We were just looking to escape the approaching European winter by heading to the Caribbean for a good time at the beach or at the pool.

I took this photo at the beach of the hotel in the morning, and it presents the beach in the perfect light. As the hotel was a bit outside of the town center of Cabarete, the beach was not very busy, mostly the guests of the hotel.

Now, more than 20 years later, Cabarete has changed quite a bit. The hotel is now called Ocean Manor Resort and it is – closed! Recent images show that serious efforts have been made to renovate and improve the complex. It looks much more attractive today than in 1998. This leaves me puzzled as to why it has been closed? (Of course, it could have been shut down temporarily during the Corona pandemic, but I feel it should have been re-opened by now as the pandemic seems to be over.)

After all, Cabarete is still an excellent destination for relaxed vacations at the beach.
