The story behind the image

The month of June 2006 was dominated (alas in Germany) by the soccer world championship. You simply could not withdraw from this event (in Germany). So, what could be better to visit a soccer match of the tournament? Well, to visit a soccer match of the German team!

On 20th June 2006 I travelled for a day to Berlin, Germany. I was joined by Dietmar, a friend and colleague of mine. We had received VIP tickets for a match of the soccer world championship: Ecuador vs. Germany. And these were “VIP tickets”, i.e. seats with an excellent view and some nice food during the halftime break. Woo-hoo!

So, we met at the airport quite early to catch our flight to Berlin. Entering the main plaza between Terminals 1 and 2 was simply breathtaking. The sunlight illuminated the plaza softly, and not a single cloud could be spotted. I just had to capture this moment. I still think this is a masterpiece of architecture today.

P.S.: Germany won their match 3:0 and closed the group phase of the tournament as winner of group A. Dietmar and I flew back in the evening and returned tired but happy to Munich.
