SEPTEMBER 1999 – The lighthouse of Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Ireland, on a morning with heavy rain. The lighthouse was still in operation, but the buildings were used as a Bed & Breakfast, providing stylish accommodation for travellers seeking utmost tranquility. Photo © by Mark Zanzig/zanzig.com
The story behind the image
In County Mayo we were extremely lucky to stay at an exclusive and very remote place, even by Co. Mayo’s standards. Clare Island Lighthouse was used as an exclusive B&B back then and they had a room available for us for a night. Even better: we stayed at the former lighthouse tower (right next to the active lighthouse.)
We had to take a small ferry from Roonah Point to the island and were picked up by the friendly landlords who brought us to the Northern tip of the island to their estate. It was a fantastic evening with excellent food and an exciting night!
Sadly, the lighthouse had not been available as accommodation for many years to follow, but while researching this blog post, I came across the new website of the lighthouse which indicates that it is now available again for exclusive stays. Hoorah!
