DECEMBER 2008 – Headlights and backlights of cars rushing by create a surreal, colorful image on a long exposure photo of the busy highway A8 near Unterhaching, Germany. © Mark Zanzig/zanzig.com
The story behind the image
I had a bit of spare time and decided to do a shot that I had wanted to do for a long time: A long exposure of the highway A8 during the blue hour. So I grabbed a tripod and my gear bag, hopped on my bicycle and drove to a perfect location on the former Neubiberg airbase. You stand up high above the highway on a tunnel, so you have a solid base for your tripod with no chance of slight movements that you would usually experience from a bridge.
At -6 °C it was quite cold, but the sky was clear, and the light was perfect. The sun had set already, and the blue hour was creating a shimmery blue that was getting darker by the minute. I set the timer to 25 seconds and waited. And waited. And waited some more.
The result: an awesome, surreal image that consists just of three colors – blue, white, and red. Nice.
