The story behind the image
At the age of 17, my mother attended a business school near Oberwinter in Germany for three months, from April to June 1960. She quickly got acquainted with her classmates, and together they explored the area and spent more than just a few beautiful days at the Rhine.
She was already very much into photography and shot many photos. Sadly, just the prints have survived the years. This image is an interesting document because it shows the heavy traffic on the Rhine on a normal day in 1960. At that time, the river was one of the most important routes for transporting goods over long distances. This has changed tremendously over the past 60 years, and it is unlikely that it will return to its former state.
