The story behind the image
The Allianz Arena is the home stadium for FC Bayern München, and both are certainly true icons of the city of Munich. The stadium is already quite impressive during the daytime and it cannot be missed when you drive by on the busy A9 highway that enters Munich from the North. But it gets really awesome after sunset when the lights will be switched on. It is not simply illuminated but starts to glow from the inside, thanks to its transparent walls. In the early times of the stadium it could glow just in red, blue, and white, but today the managers can assign any color to the transparent elements.
Because the stadium is so impressive I had planned to take a long exposure on a nice and calm spring evening with just very few clouds. I wanted the sky to be just barely visible and have the lights of the cars adding drama. So I went to the bridge crossing the A9 at 6:30 pm, set up the tripod and camera, did a couple of test shots and waited for the perfect moment. It came at 8:34 pm with this shot – an exposure time of 15 seconds at f/32 and ASA 100.
