The story behind the image

This image from the large lot of slides I acquired a while ago shows a woman posing for the photographer. The caption says ‘Cattolica’, and the name of the lady is ‘Erika’.

I think it is awesome. Really. It’s easy to envision this image as a cover photo for the popular fashion magazines of the period.

The piece of film was locked inside a glass frame and to ease with the scanning and to avoid the dreaded Newton ring, I had to get it out of its glass prison. I carefully cut open three of the four sides which were covered on all four edges by strong adhesive tape. Then I removed the lightweight cardboard frame that carried the image. Within that frame, the piece of film was fixed with adhesive tape (again!) It seems that the photographer really wanted to protect this image forever. And I understand him. I would have protected such a gem as well. How could he know that almost 70 years later some chap would want to digitally remaster his image?

Once liberated, the full beauty of the image was visible, and it required very little editing.

I love almost everything about the image: her confident, serious look, her pale complexion and decent makeup, her outfit, and the maritime setting.

Magic.
