The story behind the image
This image from the 1960s caught my attention not because I am a fan of dog races (quite the contrary, actually) but because I saw that the photographer shot an entire roll of film, and this was the one showing the action. Most other images were shots of the race track, probably trial shots to get the exposure settings right.
He probably knew that once the actual race would start he would have just one opportunity to get an action-packed shot. He was dragging the camera with the leading dog and then hit the shutter in-motion. The result is stunning as the leading dogs # 3 and # 4 are pretty sharp while the rest – and especially the spectators – gets a super-nice motion blur.
This is a challenge, even in 2026.
Nice, very nice. (Well, expect for the fact that it’s a dog race.)
