The story behind the image

In the 500+ slides lot I found this image of the vessel Porjus from Stockholm, Sweden. The image was taken at a German harbour but there is no information where or when it was taken. It was likely Hamburg, Bremerhaven, or Cuxhaven. She was an Ore/Oil Carrier (“OBO carrier”), a specialized type of bulk carrier designed to transport iron ore from Northern Sweden and liquid cargo.

The name refers to the town of Porjus in Lapland, famous for its major hydroelectric power station and its role in the Swedish “Iron Ore Line” railway. The ship was a key part of the Swedish merchant fleet during the mid-20th century, frequently seen in major industrial hubs and the Baltic Sea.

In 1978, the vessel was sold to a company in Monrovia and renamed as United Venture, operating under the Liberian flag of convenience, typical for international bulk shipping at that time.

The photographer must have been on a small ship and was pretty close to the vessel, making it appear even larger than it probably was.

A nice maritime image of a ship that is rarely documented.
