The story behind the image
This image from 1965 is from the large lot of slides I purchased a couple of weeks ago. It shows the famous Rialto Bridge. Apparently, the photographer booked a tour on a gondola and passed (of course!) this beautiful bridge as well. This is great for helping to determine the date of the photo because the city of Venice put up a banner promoting “The Mostra dei Guardi” at the Palazzo Grassi during the sumer of 1965. It was a major exhibition dedicated to the work of Francesco Guardi and his family.
Back in 1965, the city had been as busy as it had always been. Most welcome, however, is to see no smartphones being held up on the bridge. I guess that today you probably see just smartphones (and probably a number with selfie-sticks.) In this photo, just a single guy (the one in a blue and red jacket holds up a camera. Everyone else is just enjoying the atmosphere.
Nice, very nice.
