The story behind the image
Ravenna is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy and situated at the Adriatic coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is famous for historic architecture and artworks, for example the octagonal Basilica di San Vitale, the Basilica Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Colorful mosaics decorate many buildings.
In a larger lot of slides I acquired a while ago I found a number of images covering a trip to Emilia-Romagna, including Ravenna.
This photo shows the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe which is situated a bit outside of the city center and makes the church a destination “off the beaten track” for visitors of the city. The photographer stood in Via Classense and captured a view towards east.
While this image was shot on film that has really lost its colorful appeal, I decided to recover it. The reason is simple: Today, the church can not be photographed like this anymore! The small trees in the garden have grown substantially over the past seven decades and block the view from the street now.
