The story behind the image
This image from 1958 is from the large lot of slides I purchased a while ago. It shows the Piazza del Duomo with the Duomo di Milano in Italy. Back in 1958, there was virtually no traffic on the streets surrounding the piazza. Just one Fiat 500 can be seen, and the driver probably did not require the assistance of the traffic police officer who managed the traffic from his tiny stand in the middle of the crossing.
Today, the entire area is a Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL) which can only be accessed with a special permission. Of course, given todays traffic, this makes total sense. Back in 1958 noone would have dreamed about this development. 🙂
A nice historic photographic document.
