The story behind the image

During our long trip through Italy in 2000 we drove from Tuscany on the countryside towards south. We deliberately opted to not stay in Rome which would have been quite stressful and possibly chaotic with our own car. Also, we believed that Rome is the perfect destination for a city trip on a prolonged weekend (which we managed to do in 2005.)

So we passed the city in the east and stopped in the village of Tivoli at the Villa D’Este. This historic palace was erected in the 16th century. Since the end of the first World War it belongs to the Italian state and is open to the public today. Its key feature is the huge park with hundreds of tiny fountains, statues, water plays, caves, and basins.

I remember that this day had been very hot, and we were glad that we could rest in the shadows of the trees and listen to the gentle splashing of the ubiquitous water fountains.

A beautiful and peaceful place.
