The story behind the image
Here is another image by photographer Carl Haas who explored the Eastern Sierra in California in 1958. He was equipped with excellent Kodachrome films and his images look as fresh and vivid today – almost seven decades after he captured the images – as they looked back then. This fact alone turns them into fantastic photographic documents. However, he also managed to find stunning views that grab for attention.
Just like this image which he shot near Lee Vining. A large herd of sheep roams the plains with the magnificient mountains of the Eastern Sierra as a backdrop. It seems like a simple shot, but he managed to get it all right: the sheep stand out in the frame but their part in the overall composition is well balanced against the plains and the mountains. The weather was perfect, and the shot is exquisitely exposed.
A true gem.
