The story behind the image

Here is yet another image of the 500+ slides shot in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

This image shows the construction works at the Saargemünder Straße in Saarbrücken. One side of the street has been dug up forcing all cars to drive through a narrow corridor in a long queue. The restaurant Karl Degott could only be reached via planks over the dug up street.

Of course, I like this image for the countless old cars on the street. But there is mnore. It a true photojournalistic moment that probably has not been captured elsewhere as a color photo. Also, the image communnicates a certain ‘can do’ spirit. The economic uptake showed everywhere. Here, the road was dug up, probably to install remote heating, telecommunication lines, power lines, or some other form of infrastructure improvement.

An interesting, captivating image of the past.
