The story behind the image
This image was not taken by me, but it was saved by me. I purchased it the other day at an online platform as part of a 250+ image lot, all Kodachrome transparencies from around 1958.
When the parcel arrived I did not have the chance to review it thoroughly. Imagine my joy when I actually did this thorough review. The images were mostly about California and the south-west of the United States. Stunning landscapes, and more stunning landscapes. All tack-sharp, and without any color stain at all. Sure, there was a bit of dust that had settled on the film, but the overall state of the slides can only be described as ‘very good’. Now, the seller told me that the slides had already been in the bin, but he had second thoughts and took them out again and put them up for sale on the net.
Now, here the photographer, Carl Haas, stood in the middle of the busy Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills (around house number 9399) and looked towards east. The area has changed significantly since 1958. The only reliable anchor is the building with the large ‘California Bank’ sign. This is still located at number 9441 (it is the Sterling Plaza Hotel today.)
I added a nice white border, a caption, and the name of the photographer to give the well-deserved credit.
I. Just. Love. This. Image. 🙂
