Crossing the Death Valley in California on the Highway 190 is exciting: Despite the extremely straight (and boring) highway you will discover plenty of awesome photo opportunities.
Like this photo of the Mesquite Sand Dunes of Death Valley. They are fairly close to the highway, at least so close that photographer Carl Haas could walk right up to them and capture this stunning view. I totally love the contrast of the bright sand of the dunes and the shadows created by the plants and the sand patterns.
