The story behind the image
I did not capture this photo of Schloss Linderhof (near Oberammergau) in Bavaria, Germany. When it was taken in 1898, my grandfather was just four years old (born 1894) and did not even know about photography.
But v. Römmler & Jonas, the publishers of this photo, knew exctly what they were doing because this photo is exceptional. It came as an early souvenir card, a 9.4 x 14.3 cm photo print mounted to solid cardboard. A typical large cabinet photo of the period between 1890 and 1920. It is dated 1898, and it’s easy to imagine how people fell in love with the castle as soon as they saw it. The castle was open to the public since 1886 and became quickly a magnet for early tourists. These tourists were wealthy and could afford to buy the costly cabinet photos as souvenirs.

I purchased this print the other day, and it is almost in mint condition. It is very sharp and well exposed. What a joy to see all the details on the 120 Megapixel scan! 🙂
Lovely.
