The story behind the image
I think I have never been (consciously) to Luxemburg. It could be that I passed it but I probably did not step out of the car.
What a big mistake.
Because Luxemburg seems to be full of history, attractive locations – and change! When I reviewed a big slide collection I purchased a while ago, the set covering a trip to Luxemburg got my attention. The anonymous photographer took photos of everyday situations that show the city as it was back in 1967.
Here, he captured the view along the Avenue de la Liberté in Luxemburg towards the train station, Gare Luxembourg. I wouldn’t consider this image as beautiful by any means, but it holds several details and is proof for changes that took place over the past six decades.
In terms of details, I like the business guy with his luggage on the right. Apparently, suitcases with wheels had not yet been invented. The bus on the left and the hotel signs are nice too.
Comparing 1967 with street images of 2024, there are several changes. There is a new highrise on the left (the old round building still exists, though.) The construction works on the right have been completed by now. 😉 There is a new traffic light at the T-crossing in the front (into Rue de Strasbourg.) The traffic light in the back has been upgraded, too. The City Hotel is still in business and has improved its facade. And there are train tracks for trams! A massive change that reduced the wide street into one narrow one-way lane.
A very interesting photo. In my view.
