The story behind the image
This image from one of the recently purchased lots shows a cargo ship named Alpha on the Elbe river near Brunsbüttel before entering the Kiel Canal that connects the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Apparently, the ship was registered in Hamburg and sailed under German flag. I couldn’t find sufficient information on the Internet about its history, so I leave it to you to find out more.
What I like about this image are three things:
- It has a very direct look. The photographer was (obviously) on eye-level with the ALPHA, and quite close. This creates a nice visual impact.
- The ladder is still hanging out, probably to take up a guide for entering and navigating the canal.
- The buildings of the control tower at Brunsbüttel (in the back). In recent years, these have been upgraded, and there are some new buildings today.
All-in-all, a nice maritime image.
