The story behind the image
This image shows the long central beach of Langeoog in Germany. The island is located in the western part of the German North Sea coast and has been a popular holiday destination for a long time.
Tourism began in 1863 with the opening of the first accommodation on the island and has steadily increased since then. Today, more than 200,000 visitors come to the island every year. Depsite this rush, the central village could preserve its charms and did not copy the mistakes of other destinations.
This image from our family archive shows the island in the summer of 1957. You can clearly see the large amount of traditional beach chairs which are common along the German coasts. Back then, however, guests were still allowed to build so called ‘Strandburgen’ (lit. ‘beach fortresses’) that surround each beach chair just like a (admittedly tiny) fortress wall.
Very nice.
