The story behind the image

This image shows a traditional fishing boat that was common along the North Sea coast throughout the 20th century. It carries the registration WES 43 and has a long history. Built 1951 in Ditzum for the Linneberg family, it served as fish trawler for almost two decades before it was sold to Sweden.

This photo is from the large lot of slides I recently purchased, and it was shot around 1964 at the beach of Langeoog. This image show the boat in the traditional setup for fishing, but already in the 1960s it was common practice to offer tourist excursions along the island. Another image shows how this was done.

Now, while researching WES 43 I came across the site of captain Jann Lnneberg who received his education by his father on this boat in the early 1960s. Soon after, he bought his first boat to continue the family business in the 6th generation. Now, that’s what I call ‘continuity’.

Awesome.
